This hands-on painting workshop for beginners uses colour and mark-making to engage with our inner feelings.

Many of the most important parts of our lives are invisible - our emotions, thoughts and dreams, our relationships with others, the way we move through life. Abstract painting seeks to reveal this interior world, our “inner tonality”, through colour and how we apply it.

Colour is a sensation which acts directly on our emotions. From bright, active yellows to deep, reflective blues, colour can be used to describe the intricate range of human experience. Each colour has its own tone, like a musical note, and by composing with various hues we can create complex and compelling pictures of our current state.

We can create new states through this method of painting, too, developing fresh, positive paths through the clutter of our lives. Art is a vehicle, so involving ourselves with intuitive colour and authentic mark-making helps us explore, accept, imagine, and strengthen our inner tonality.

Artist Evan Woodruffe will guide you through this colourful class with plenty of insight, humour, and sensitivity.

Evan has MFA (1st Class) from Elam, and is a long-standing supporter of the visual arts, not only as an artist, but as a collector, sponsor, teacher, and advocator. He runs Akepiro Street Studios, home to over a dozen artists since 2008, is Global Brand Ambassador for both Schmincke Artist Colours and da Vinci Artist Brushes, and is a regular contributor to community art events.

Recent exhibitions include 8th Beijing Biennale and Sydney Contemporary. His exhibition Quad is at Hastings City Art Gallery from 28th April to 18th July 2023. Evan is represented by Paul Nache Gallery.
