This exhibition presents a sample of the original architectural features and evolution of the Heretaunga streetscape, bringing together hand-drawn plans for a cluster of Art Deco buildings in central Hastings.

Intersecting with the eastern edge of Russell Street, the Heretaunga Street 100 block includes iconic landmarks such as the JR Mackenzie building; the New Grand Hotel, R & R building; State Theatre; and Westerman’s.

With much of this area of town requiring restoration and earthquake strengthening, the plans are a timely reminder of the architectural ambitions brought to life by local builders, carpenters and artisans, and the future possibilities for these heritage buildings.

Curated by Charlie Ropitini and Sophie Davis in collaboration with Hastings District Council’s Content Management team. Ngā mihi nui Miranda Welch and Rhonda Laverty, who made this exhibition possible.
